This is a great idea but the small question arises: are you sure social features may cover all your needs? Yes, there are big areas of knowledge which you can find with the help of friends or contributors. Unfortunately, humanity may generate infinite row of queries and needs which were unexplored by anyone.

On the other hand, I'm working in a little different direction: can you precisely find what you want? Is it possible? The answer is in semantic ecosystem, which will change not only Internet itself but the way we interact with computers. Think about precise search. Think about exact identification. Think about human-friendly and fine-grained semantics. The way we deal with user interface and even files are not ideal today until the moment we integrate semantics (namely integrate, not just using Semantic Web).

If you are interested, you can find more on this:

At the time of writing (a few years ago now), Yahoo *should* have been in the right position (and had enough pain to motivate them) to make this play.

In 2008, when I last reviewed the idea, I tipped Microsoft to be best poised. Again, that doesn't mean they'll have the motivation!

Not that I know of! I spoke to some people at Google about this at their offices in London about 4 or 5 years ago, but I think I wasn't speaking to the right people, and they didn't get it.

Came across this - very interesting article I totally agree - too often designers & developers forget the simple things and we try to make it too complex. Not sure where @Freelancer comes from, I have been preaching this "openness" for ages. It will eventually put the web back in the hands of the "smaller" people who have a less vested interest in how the internet develops - i.e. MS,Google etc., but more in how it can be used. The concept of "open social networking" is no different from the "telephone" you call contacts etc. It is just that with technology it is now very easy to make it "reactive" rather than "pro-active". What people too often forget it that the internet has complete parallels from the time when it did not exist - to that extent many of the terms we use come from there - "networking" - remember the old fashioned networking; business meetings, down the pub. Just the same, just now on-line. Affiliate marketing - well that's just the MLM model of old, just the numbers are far greater. There are so many parallels, the time has come (and I see it well before your 2 years) when "this will happen" then the internet can be truly both global, local and relevant to everybody
