BetAdvisor – A Test in Conversion Rate Optimisation

We recently completed a Conversion Rate Optimisation project for one of our clients, BetAdvisor.

We were testing landing pages which were designed to get people to sign up to BetAdvisor’s excellent 7-Day Free Trial.

So, let me give you a bit of an idea as to what they do. Basically, BetAdvisor offer sports betting tips via their network of expert sports tipsters.

These guys seriously know their stuff and their every movement is tracked so that you can see stats on what they specialise in, and more importantly, how successful they are. Seriously, these guys seem to us to be a better investment than property, pensions, or stocks & shares right now. That’s what the numbers say!

Being a gambling man, I have decided to give it a go and sign up myself. So if you don’t see me on here any more, you know why, OK? ;)

Anyway, back to the project. We created a number of versions of the sign-up page so that we could test them side-by-side using Visual Website Optimizer.

Take a look at the following screen grabs and see if you can tell which one performed the best and why. Once I’ve had a bit of response, I’ll post some stats so you can see whether your hunch was right.

    I’m torn between 6, 7, and 4.

6 and 7 are exactly the same except for the picture, I’m not sure if people would enjoy the play on words with the picture of the child, or actually relate to the person that said he did it.

But number 4 is offering more then a free trial, it’s offering 5 free picks.

But people still love the word FREE!!!

…. I’m torn, can’t wait to find out!

  2. Bob Tabor says:

I’m betting #1, but any of them that have the form right there. Anxious to hear the results. Great post!

  3. dobes says:

    I’d bet on #2

  4. Ralph says:

    Version 2 is my favorit.

  5. Andrew Lloyd Gordon says:

I like and dislike elements of each example.

However, if I had to choose my fave, then I’d go for #3.

  6. Clint says:

    I would go with #3

  7. Jordan says:

    #2 or #6

  8. Ron Reed says:

I’m going with #7 – it’s a play on words and has a child similar to the eTrade baby. The benefit is, “it’s so easy a child could do it”.

  9. Toni says:

    I bet on #1

  10. Jill Scott says:

I would choose number 4. I like the fact that the picture is a smiling ordinary person rather than a professional footballer, a very serious man or a child, the fact that it offers something vaulable for free and you only have to put in your email address and password to access the information. I also like the use of words, such as “beat the bookies” and “join the sporting elite”. My second choice would be number 2.

Some of the basic facts change (15.77% vs 7.66% average yield of the last 30 days – versions #1 and #2) – and I don’t see how this will help you at all analyze which of those two versions perform the best. Having said that I don’t think 1 or 2 are the winners, I’m going with 4 or 6. What do I win???

    • Ben Hunt says:

Hi Gareth. The average yield would be a dynamic, changing factor, so that wouldn’t affect a proper split test.

I don’t have the actual result stats yet, but we’ll post what we have

  12. Rob says:

While I wouldn’t bet on my own judgement, I’d say 1 or 2. One, obvious thing to do, and the free trial versions (5-7) feel like they have a greater commitment in signing up somehow.

Quite prepared to be totally wrong :-)

  13. owen says:

    I’d say version two…

  14. wites says:

    I’d say #2, #3 or #6

  15. Moose says:

    #1, hands down.

  16. Gareth says:

Hi Ben, so, which one was the winner?
