Google Provides Hundreds of Free Open-source Web Fonts
Google Web Fonts came to light a while back, and it seemed like it might be a viable alternative to Flash-based font replacement methods such as Cufon and SIFR.
The one thing that kept it from being a real solution was that there was only a handful of fonts available, so not enough choice to make it really useful.
Now Google has released Google Web Fonts v2, and they have 180 fonts and counting. That’s plenty to be going on with.
They also have a slick new interface, for easy previewing and filtering of fonts, and you can add fonts you use regularly to your own personal collection for easy access.

But best of all is their ‘quick use’ button, which lets you select the styles and characters you want, how you want to embed the font, and to see the impact it will have on page load speed, and then it gives you the code you need to paste into your site to make it work. No more looking up font embedding tutorials because you’ve forgotten how to do it.
I think this is a big step forward in making free web fonts available to everyone. Another +1 for Google!

This is such an elegantly simple tool that I’m going to recommend it as a reference when previewing WordPress themes. Many themes that offer font options merely give a list of font names and it takes time to select and preview each one on a theme demo. A quick look at Google Webfonts will provide a shortlist that saves heaps of time.
Tip for newbs: type the site name in the preview box where it currently says Grumpy wizards …and adjust the font size to your liking so you can see exactly how the font looks with your name.
